I’ve been doing a lot of work identifying causes of unnecessary anxiety in my life (spoiler alert: they are ALL unnecessary), and one of the biggies has been email.
Do you get a pit in your stomach every time you update your email inbox and see 10+ unread messages downloading? I don’t know about you, but I get an awful lot of luxury hair salon offers and considering I don’t own a blow dryer or hair brush, I think they could target their marketing a touch. And then there are the “10+ Ways to Look Sexier in Bed” and the “Daily New Update from X,Y,Z” (And by “daily” you mean three times a day?) and the “Bands Coming to Boston” (I don’t live in Boston anymore), and the list goes ON AND ON.
And even though I never plan on opening any of these offers and updates, the sight of them just sitting there cluttering up my inbox makes me more than a little anxious.
Friends, the madness must stop. Why? Because much like physical clutter leads to mental clutter, email clutter leads to Satan.
So today’s Secret to a Happy Life is:
Take 20 minutes today to unsubscribe all the spam in your email. And then do a happy dance when you’re done.
Dear readers, I’d love to hear from you: how do you keep your inbox and mental clutter to a minimum?

Truth!
I just did this and I feel great. Someone sent me a link to a website that was really handy. You tell it your email address and the scans your inbox (gmail or whatever) to find anything that looks like a newsletter. It generates a list. You review it, and check a box next to each sender to unsubscribe from and bam! Done. Your inbox is 20 pounds lighter.
It wasn’t perfect, but it’s close. When I used it, I unsubscribed to a few dozen things. It successfully unsubscribed to all them save for one or two. Pretty decent, and it was super fast! .So fast, that I barely had time to register the name of the site.
As soon as I find it, I’ll post it here. xo
AMAZING.
Dying to find this heavenly site.
Got it! (There are good people on the Internet. Love them!) The site is: http://www.swizzle.com
Whoops. It’s theswizzle.com
Love it. Testing **NOW**
On a similar note, I have a friend who works as a business consultant teaching people how to be happier at their jobs. Her biggest piece of advice is to turn off your email alerts. If you’re ready to see if there’s a new e-mail, then actively go and check. Otherwise, concentrate on what you’re doing RIGHT NOW. Can be applied to many other life situations.
YES. Dig it.
