Holy Donuts!

In Body, Food, Reviews on 27 March, 2011 at 01:47

I didn’t really like donuts until I became allergic to gluten and dairy.  And ate a Kinnikinnick donut.  Oh my goodness, I am in baked good heaven.

The kind people at Kinnikinnick sent me a box of their Cinnamon Sugar Donuts to sample and I happily obliged.  Kinnikinnick specializes in super allergy-friendly products ranging form cookies to pizza crusts (those reviews to come!), all of which are gluten free, casein free, nut free, and many of which are slo free of corn, potato, soy, sugar, eggs, and yeast.

These donuts (GF, DF, SF, CF, NF, PF)  come frozen and are super simple to prepare:  just stick them in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and BAM: delicious cinnamon sugar goodness right there.  Now, I repeat: I never really like donuts- to me they always seemed like a nutritional waste that didn’t taste good enough to justify eating that often.

But these donuts are unlike any Dunkin’ Donut, gas station, hydrogenated, lardy thing I have ever tried.  The taste is not too sweet, the dough is thick (that’s right, it’s gluten free and chewy delicious thick) and you don’t feel like you need to take a shower after eating them.  They reminded me of picking pumpkins and having fresh cider and farmhouse donuts with my mom and little bro when we were kids.  Only better.  Serious.

Another major reason I love these things is their ingredient label.   This is simple, real food.  And each donut is only 170 calories, making it a totally reasonable indulgence.  (Cake donuts at Dunkin’ Donuts have around 350 calories, just for comparison).  And you want to know something else?  (I feel like one of those, “But wait! There’s more!” commercials).  Each donut only has 11 grams of sugar.  11 grams of sugar, for a donut? For a cinnamon sugar donut?  That’s about 10 grams less than a medium-sized banana. Less sugar than a banana!  Pretty awesome nutritional stats for a dessert-  a delicious, decadent treat is allergy-friendly and while maybe not exactly “healthy,” certainly not “unhealthy.”  I can’t wait to try their other flavors!

Holy donuts.  I’ve been converted.

  1. Mmmm, those look delicious! I haven’t tried the donuts, but I love Kinnikinnick’s version of oreos. They are gf and df, so I’m happy! Im going to look for these donuts next time I am at Whole Foods.

    • I LOVE their K-Toos! They really do taste like oreos! I used them to make “Oreo” Truffles:
